12U Gold Go Down
Swinging in State Tournament!
The Carlsbad 12U Gold
team, after winning both games Friday, came within an out of staying in
the winner's bracket and advancing to the Quarterfinals of the ASA SoCal
State Tournament.
In the 1PM game, with
temperatures were in the '90s, the Golden Girls dropped a controversial
and emotionally charged game to a team from Claremont (Los Angeles).
Jumping out to a 6-0 lead by the second inning it appeared to be smooth
sailing. The Carlsbad girls were hitting lights out with hits by Torrey
Read, Caroline Goodger, Adriana Hueter and Amanda Bojorquez. Things were
looking good until the momentum suddenly shifted and Claremont was able
to scratch out a few runs in each of the next 3 innings to tie the score
and send the game into international tie-breaker. C-bad added 3 runs in
the first IT inning but Claremont responded by scoring 3 of their own in
the bottom half despite the fact that Carlsbad was within one out of
winning the game on several occasions. Carlsbad went up by two in the
next IT inning but Claremont responded by scoring 3 for the win in the
bottom half. It was very close, tension packed game that dropped our
girls to the losers bracket.
After packing up our
gear and heading to a different park, the Golden Girls took on a HUGE
team from Imperial Beach at 5:30 PM. This team had 5-6 girls that were
bigger than Barry Bonds, but it turned out that the C-bad girls had the
big bats. The first inning started with back-to-back homers from Sami
Keville (a two-run blast) and Jill Johnson who also sent one sailing
over the left fielder's head. The power surge continued the next inning
when Emma Schneider sent a bomb into the left center gap for a 3-run
homer. There was also great hitting from Tori Nirschl and Jacque
Batchelder. Shelley Procter came on to shut the IB "Giants" down to
seal a 14-6 victory and keep the dream alive.
Unfortunately, our next
game (at 9:15 PM!) came against a very disciplined and tough team from
West Valley (LA) and our Girls just ran out of gas. It had been a long
day and we were officially eliminated from the State Tournament at 10:45
PM.
Congratulations to all
the 12U Gold players, parents, fans, and especially coaches Buzz Keville,
Joe Procter, Peter Huetter and Tom Krol. It was a fantastic experience
and CSA is very proud of the accomplishments of this team.
