Note:

See Schedule Schedule of Junior Umpire Game Umpires for rest of March and April Preliminary

NEW RULE CHANGES:

New Rules (for 8U only) starting on April 1st. If you umpire an 8U game, make sure you are aware of the new rules:

1. We will start allowing stolen bases during the 8U games. Players can steal 2nd and 3rd base, BUT home plate will remain frozen.

- The runners can steal one base PER BATTER (not per pitch),

and they can't advance extra bases on an errant catcher's throw at any time.

2. The second rule change will be the elimination of coach-pitch (base on balls will be issued instead), UNLESS the bases are loaded.

- if the bases are loaded and the batter receives a walk, regular coach pitching will occur in that situation.

The goal is that no base-runners will be forced home as a result of a base-on-balls.

If you have any questions about the rule changes, please see me.

Make sure you instruct the managers at the pre-game meeting about the new rules starting April 1st.

What is your call?

Before the pitch, there is a runner at third and two outs. Batter hits a legally pitched ball towards first base. First base fielder fields the ball in fair territory right in front of the batter runner. Batter runner slows down running towards first base.

First base fielder runs towards batter runner to apply a tag with the ball on the batter runner instead of attempting a force out at first base. At the same time runner on third runs home to step on home plate. Upon making the tag on the batter runner for the third out, does the run scored count? (see answer below)

Carlsbad Softball Association (CSA) Junior Umpires

Availability Schedule turn in now due

#1. You must turn in your Availability Schedule slot selections for league games in order to umpire. The current league schedule of games is on the CSA web site (click here) or on Schedules.

CSA make-up clinic

#2.  We had another Jr. Umpire clinic on Feb. 18th, 1-3pm, Field #3, Calavera.  This clinic was mandatory for all 1st year umpires.  It was also mandatory for anyone that missed the ASA Umpire Rules Clinic and wanted to umpire this year in CSA to attend this clinic.

ASA Umpire Test Completion

#3.  An ASA Umpire Test will need to be completed by each umpire.

Your homework is answer test questions assigned to you:

(Questions are from the 2007 ASA UMPIRE EXAM ANSWER SHEET handed out at the ASA clinic)

  •  Jr. Umps with last names starting with A-K, Answer Questions 1-20 Part 1, Alternate Fast Pitch 8, 9,11,15, and Part 3 Mechanics 41-45

  •  Jr. Umps with last names starting with L-Z, Answer Questions 21-40 Part 2, Alternate Fast Pitch 22, 26, 27, 30, 36, and Part 3 Mechanics 46-50

  •  Everyone Answer, Alternate Fast Pitch Mechanics Question 41.

Note: Site the Rule, and page number for each answer.

Place your answers and Rule information

on a separate piece of paper.

The actual test sheets will be used at a later date

Thanks !

Please complete your portion of the test and return to Coach Kincade by February 18th.
